Plot summary
1. The disaster of the country of quicksand
There is a country of quicksand on the western seashore, which is full of gold. Because it is close to the sunset, every time the sun sets into the sea, the sound is deafening, causing the people in the city to be heartbroken and miserable.
The Buddha saw the pity of all living beings and gave the sunset drum. Every evening, the sunset drum was beaten to resist the noise, and the people no longer had to worry about their lives. To show their gratitude, the people respected Buddhism and repaired the Buddha’s body. Over time, this place was called the Golden Buddha Kingdom. Many monks came here to admire the reputation. The whole country respected Buddha more than the king. King Sha felt that it was too challenging to the kingship, so he ordered people to destroy the Buddha’s body, drive away the monks, and change the country’s name to Shali.
Since then, every evening when the sunset drum was beaten, a huge viper would appear to disturb the people. The viper was actually the mount of Lingji Bodhisattva. Because he saw that he no longer respected Buddha, he was sent to the lower world to warn King Sha. King Sha sent troops many times, but could not defeat it.
2. Yellow Wind Monster Comes to Help
At the same time, there was a yellow rat at the foot of Lingshan Mountain. Because he stole the oil from the glass lamp in front of the Buddha, he became a yellow wind monster in the lower world. When the yellow wind monster heard that the people of Liusha Country were bullied by the viper, he came to eradicate the evil, but his three-flavor divine wind was always restrained by the wind-fixing beads on the Buddha’s head on the back of the viper, and he could not get close. Finally, with the help of the man of destiny, he defeated the viper and protected the people. He was honored as the national teacher by the king of Sha, and began to erect a monument for him and issued an order to respect rats. At one time, many rat spirits came.
The king of Sha had three sons. Sha Dalang was brave and upright, Sha Erlang had supernatural powers but low intelligence, and Sha Sanlang was smart and kind and liked Buddhism. Dalang was imprisoned because he was dissatisfied with respecting the yellow wind monster as the national teacher, and Sanlang ran away from home in anger. The yellow wind monster felt that he had brought many troubles to the country, so he took the monsters away.
3. Settling in Huangfengling
The mountain god of Huangfengling was increasingly harassed by Shi Gandang, who was originally a stone spirit. He suddenly found many Buddha heads sucking living things in the mountain. During the eradication process, he was affected by it and grew many Buddha heads on his body. Then he became mentally confused and began to suck living things. Huangfengguai broke the Buddha heads on Shi Gandang and threw them into the mountain. He also divided his spirit to two mountain gods, and the mountain gods respected Huangfengguai to settle here. After the two mountain gods shared their spirit, they actually had human hearts and human forms, and gave birth to stone children. The monsters called them Shifu, Shimu, and Shizi. Shifu left for some reason, and his son went to find his father, leaving only Shimu in the mountain.
When Tang Sanzang and his four companions went to the West to obtain scriptures, they passed by Huangfengguai’s territory. In order to show filial piety to the king, his most loyal Tiger Vanguard captured Tang Sanzang. Sun Wukong went to rescue him, but because he could not defeat Huangfengguai’s evil wind, he could only ask Lingji Bodhisattva to come out of the mountain and use the Dingfengzhu to rescue Tang Sanzang. During this period, Hu Xianfeng was killed by Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie, and Huang Fengguai was accepted as a disciple by Lingji Bodhisattva.
4. The Yellow Wind Monster Returns
Although Tiger Vanguard died, he left behind two sons. Tiger Brother imitated his father to lead all the monsters, maintain order, and protect the local people. The people built the Crouching Tiger Temple for him. Tiger Brother was very jealous, but did nothing. When Tiger Brother reorganized the Yellow Wind Ridge, he met the big stone spirit who also guarded the mountain. He was the most powerful stone spirit bred by the stone mother in the mountain.
Since the Yellow Wind Monster left, the country of Sand was punished by the Bodhisattva because the whole people respected rats, and all turned into rats. The country went into decline. Later, when they heard that the Yellow Wind Monster had returned from cultivation, they went to seek refuge. When the Yellow Wind Monster came back this time, he not only obtained the ear-hearing anger, one of the six roots of Sun Wukong, but also held the head of Lingji Bodhisattva as a container, trying to refine this treasure.
The Tiger brothers were angry that the Yellow Wind Monster did not protect their father at the beginning, so they went to take revenge. After the Tiger Brother was seriously injured by the Yellow Wind Monster, in order to protect his brother, Tiger Brother begged for mercy from the Yellow Wind Monster and volunteered to become the new Tiger Vanguard to protect the Yellow Wind Monster again.
The Yellow Wind Monster wanted to practice in seclusion, so he asked Tiger Vanguard to persuade the Stone Spirit to surrender and appointed him as the Stone Vanguard. The two of them guarded the gate together. Tiger brother knew that his brother had become a guard for the enemy again. He didn’t know why, so he hid in a dry well to recuperate, thinking of revenge one day. He became more and more crazy and turned into a crazy tiger.
5. Being an accomplice to the tiger
In the past, there was a swordsman whose wife and children were infected with diseases by the yellow sand. After his wife died, his son became weaker and weaker. He heard that there was a Bodhisattva in the mountains who could cure wind diseases, so he stayed in Dingfeng Village to look for the Bodhisattva. When he passed by a dry well, he met Crazy Tiger. Crazy Tiger pretended to be Tiger Brother and said that he was a tiger god who protected the people and could cure the child. The swordsman was skeptical, but when he saw the child jumping around after drinking the water in the gourd, he believed it. Crazy Tiger asked him to catch some living people to restore his body and completely eliminate the wind and sand. The swordsman agreed and often led people there. The child became healthier and healthier. One day, the villagers knew the whole story and beat the child to death with sticks. The swordsman was heartbroken and killed all the villagers. In the end, because of the tiger’s accomplice, he became a tiger’s accomplice and wandered around with a child’s rattle on his body.
The story of the scholar and the fox represents that good and evil are just a matter of thought. Buddha is not that good, and monsters are not that evil. It is just that different choices made in different situations have led to the complexity of the world.

A wonderful serenity has taken possession of my entire soul, like these sweet mornings of spring which I enjoy with my whole heart. I am alone, and feel the charm of existence in this spot, which was created for the bliss of souls like mine. Gregor then turned to look out the window at the dull weather. Drops of rain could be heard hitting the pane, which made him feel quite sad.
