As many people tackle their regular tidying routines, music has become an important companion, making chores more enjoyable and giving an energy boost. Studies and surveys have found that specific songs and playlists are especially popular among those cleaning their homes, creating a trend for chore-focused playlists.
Recent research by Homeaglow analyzed more than 5,000 cleaning-related playlists on Spotify. They discovered that high-energy pop and dance tracks are often the top choices for cleaning activities. The average tempo of the most popular songs was found to be 121 beats per minute, a tempo that helps to keep listeners motivated and focused, much like in a workout or gym class.
The top picks include lively and well-known hits such as “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)” by Whitney Houston, “9 to 5” by Dolly Parton, and “Toxic” by Britney Spears. These tracks feature infectious rhythms and upbeat lyrics, helping people maintain enthusiasm as they clean. Other frequently played songs for chores include “Lose Control” by Teddy Swims, “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus, and “Low” by Flo Rida featuring T-Pain. According to expert cleaner Sara Aparacio from Homeaglow, a playlist with a mix of energetic and soothing tracks works best, as some cleaning tasks require more focus and slower music can help avoid mistakes.
Family traditions also play a role in cleaning music. Nostalgic favorites in many households include R&B and classic pop tracks such as “Before I Let Go” by Frankie Beverly and Maze, “Never Too Much” by Luther Vandross, and gospel songs like “Stomp” by Kirk Franklin. These songs add a fun and familiar atmosphere to cleaning sessions, especially during weekends.
Experts recommend curating a playlist that matches the length of your usual cleaning session or grouping songs by chore, such as dusting or vacuuming, to keep motivation high. With the right soundtrack, cleaning can feel less like a chore and more like a fun activity, making it easier to enjoy even the most routine household tasks.
