For the first time in history, both the top album and top song on the U.S. charts are by female country artists, marking a significant moment for the genre. Megan Moroney, known for her “emo cowgirl” style, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with her album “Cloud 9.” At the same time, Ella Langley’s emotional breakup song “Choosin’ Texas” once again captured the No. 1 spot on the singles chart. This simultaneous achievement by Moroney and Langley shines a light on the evolving role of women in country music, especially given the industry’s history of often sidelining female performers.
The rise of both artists comes nearly a decade after controversy in country music radio, when consultants compared female artists to “tomatoes” in a salad, arguing that too many female songs should not be played back to back. Now, Moroney and Langley are showing that there is plenty of room for female talent and different musical styles at the top, with Moroney blending pop influences and Langley embracing a more traditional country sound. Collaborations are also making a difference, with country star Miranda Lambert co-writing “Choosin’ Texas.”
To mark Langley’s recent chart-topping success, a special playlist of nine songs about Texas has been created. The selection honors the Lone Star State through a variety of genres. Songs from legendary artists include Ernest Tubb’s “Waltz Across Texas,” Tanya Tucker’s “Texas (When I Die),” and George Strait’s “Amarillo by Morning.” The playlist also features iconic tracks from Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, blues legend Stevie Ray Vaughan, and indie musicians like Mitski and Pavement.
Adding to the celebration, Beyoncé’s energetic country single “Texas Hold ‘Em” became a milestone in music history, making her the first Black woman to top the Hot Country Songs chart, despite some radio stations refusing to play her music. This blend of musical influences—from classic honky-tonk to blues, rock, and contemporary pop—demonstrates how songs about Texas continue to bridge generations and musical tastes.
As more female artists gain recognition and a wider range of voices are heard in mainstream country, the industry is showing signs of meaningful change. These Texas-themed songs, old and new, not only pay tribute to the state but also represent the growing impact of women and diverse creators in shaping the future of American music.
