Churches across the country are embracing new approaches to worship music and choral singing, aiming to enrich faith communities and promote unity. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently expanded its hymnbook by adding twelve new songs, many with themes tied to the Old Testament. Leaders say these additions will help members deepen their study of scripture and connect more closely to the teachings of the Bible both at home and during church gatherings. The final collection is expected to reach about 375 hymns across many languages, with full release planned in the coming years. Church leaders encouraged members to learn and incorporate these songs into their worship routines, noting that music can powerfully teach doctrine and bring people together.

Meanwhile, the Presbyterian Association of Musicians held a conference called “Come Sunday” at Westminster Presbyterian Church in West Chester, Pennsylvania, where participants experienced immersive choral workshops. Led by Dr. Arreon A. Harley-Emerson, the sessions highlighted Gospel music and the Black church tradition, including works by Duke Ellington and Mahalia Jackson. The gathering sought to honor historic styles while giving attendees practical tools to use in their own worship services. The event closed with a poem by Danté Stewart, weaving together references to contemporary artists and classic singers.

Across different denominations, music and service are seen as vital ways to build community. At a recent outreach in Irvine, California, young volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints helped deliver food to local charities, demonstrating the church’s emphasis on using time thoughtfully and supporting neighbors in need. Leaders like Sharon Eubank expressed that relationships formed through service are among the most powerful aspects of their humanitarian work.

Choral singing also remains a strong tradition in church life. Experiences like the immersive workshop at the PAM conference and the addition of globally themed hymns to worship books are part of an effort to reflect diverse backgrounds and encourage unity. Church leaders have stressed that sharing music is not only about celebrating tradition but also about finding new ways to connect faith communities.

In recent weeks, both local and global faith groups have focused on songs about church and worship as tools to inspire, heal, and unite. By bringing together fresh compositions and honoring longstanding musical styles, congregations are strengthening their spiritual practices and drawing people closer together.
