Dance and music fans are set for an exciting weekend as two major events celebrate the art of movement and highlight some of the best songs about dancing. In Ireland, the semi-final of Dancing with the Stars will feature five remaining couples competing for a spot in the season finale. This week’s theme, Dancing through the Decades, challenges contestants to perform dances inspired by different genres, songs, and themes from the past century.
Each pair will take on two routines. The first is an individual dance based on a selected decade, ranging from Charleston routines of the 1920s to modern Samba performances set to hits like Beyoncé’s Single Ladies from the 2000s. In their second dance, couples will be joined by another professional dancer for the Time Machine Trio, adding extra complexity and excitement to their performance. Dances will be scored out of forty points, and the new format could shake up the judges’ leaderboard significantly.
Contestants are set to perform to some of the most iconic songs about dancing, including Guns ’n’ Roses’ Welcome to the Jungle for a Paso Doble, Earth, Wind & Fire’s Boogie Wonderland for a Salsa, and Little Richard’s Tutti Frutti for a Jive. The semi-final also includes influences from disco, K-pop, and classic American Smooth inspired by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. The public vote and judges’ scores together will determine who faces the dreaded Dance-Off.
Meanwhile, in Chicago, the Chicago Tap Theatre will present its new show, The Countdown: Where Numerology Meets the Beat, combining tap dance and live music. The group’s mid-season production explores the power of numbers “2” and “3” through creative choreography by leading tap dancers. The event will run at the Bramble Arts Loft from March 5 to 8, featuring both evening performances and a special gala.
Audiences can expect a lively fusion of music and dance, with routines celebrating the creativity and joy found in tap and other dance styles. Both events spotlight how songs about dancing remain central to dance performances, offering entertainment and inspiration for both participants and viewers. The celebrations promise memorable moments, as dancers pay tribute to decades of hit songs and deliver performances filled with energy and emotion.
