Every year, music fans and industry insiders look forward to identifying the unofficial “song of the summer,” a track that captures the season’s energy and becomes a defining cultural moment. In previous years, memorable anthems such as Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” in 2012 or the country-infused hits from Post Malone and Morgan Wallen in 2024 dominated summer playlists. However, the summer of 2025 presents a different picture.
Billboard’s latest charts show Alex Warren’s “Ordinary” holding the number one position on the Hot 100 for nine out of the past ten weeks. While its chart success is undeniable, “Ordinary” deviates from the typical upbeat and carefree vibe expected from summer anthems. Instead, it blends styles reminiscent of bands like Imagine Dragons and Coldplay, resulting in a more reflective and serious tone rather than an energetic party song.
Morgan Wallen continues to have a strong presence this summer with three tracks from his album “I’m the Problem” ranking high on the charts. His duet with Tate McRae, “What I Want,” combines trap beats with smooth vocals but lacks the infectious energy that often defines summer hits. Other established artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, and Chappell Roan also maintain chart visibility. Yet many of their songs have been in circulation for months, which weakens their association specifically with this summer season.
Experts in the music industry point to several reasons behind this lack of fresh, vibrant summer tracks. The prolonged popularity of streaming hits and radio stations favoring familiar songs contribute to a stagnant chart environment. Additionally, many top artists have delayed releasing new music or peaked outside of the traditional summer window. This mix has resulted in fewer lively tunes that truly embody the carefree spirit typically linked to summertime music.
Despite these challenges, some newer releases are gaining momentum and could become summer favorites. Sabrina Carpenter’s “Manchild,” Ravyn Lenae’s “Love Me Not,” and Justin Bieber’s recent single “Daisies” all carry summery vibes. Additionally, KPop group Demon Hunters have injected fresh energy into the season with soundtrack songs entering the top 10. As August unfolds, listeners remain hopeful that a breakout hit will soon emerge to capture the essence of summer once again.
