Saranac Lake’s Lake Flower Landing is set to host a special concert featuring the renowned folk duo Sally Rogers and Howie Bursen on Tuesday, April 14 at 7 p.m. The pair have been performing together since their first meeting in a Greenwich Village coffeehouse in 1981. Over the years, they have earned a strong reputation across the United States and Canada for their engaging folk music performances.
Both artists have appeared on the popular radio show A Prairie Home Companion, which helped boost their national recognition. They have released two albums together under the Flying Fish label, and each has an extensive solo career with multiple recordings and musical projects. Rogers is celebrated for her clear and beautiful voice, praised by Frets magazine as “clear as the queen’s diamonds,” while The Washington Post has highlighted her excellent instrumental skills.
Sally Rogers has received numerous accolades throughout her career. Her second album was named “Best Folk Album of the Year” by the National Association of Independent Record Distributors. Folk legend Pete Seeger once remarked that Rogers “has a beautiful voice and has written many extraordinarily good songs that are going to reach out and touch large numbers of people.” In addition to performing, she served as Connecticut State Troubadour in 1997 and works as a Master Teaching Artist for the Connecticut Commission on the Arts. She also teaches music to young children and serves as an adjunct professor at Lesley University.
Howie Bursen is known for his warm baritone voice, sharp sense of humor, and impressive banjo and guitar playing. Chicago Magazine called his guitar arrangements “stunning,” and he is regarded as one of the finest banjo players in the folk music scene. His solo album on Folk Legacy Records received critical acclaim, and his song “Small Business Blues” was featured in Pete Seeger’s book Carry It On. Aside from music, Bursen holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from Cornell University and has transitioned from academia to winemaking at Sharpe Hill Vineyards in Pomfret, Connecticut.
The upcoming concert at Lake Flower Landing promises to be a memorable event for fans of folk and country music, especially those who appreciate songs about lakes and nature themes. Both artists bring decades of experience and heartfelt storytelling through their music, making this performance an opportunity to enjoy authentic folk traditions.
