The renowned indie rock band The Strokes has unveiled their latest single “Going Shopping” as a lead track from their forthcoming album Reality Awaits, set for release on June 26, 2026. This marks the band’s first album in six years, following their Grammy-winning project The New Abnormal. Fans first experienced “Going Shopping” during a live debut at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco on April 6, 2026, where Julian Casablancas introduced the song with a casual remark acknowledging its prior circulation.
In an innovative move, The Strokes sent cassette tapes containing the studio version of “Going Shopping” to a select group of 100 fans who signed up through their SMS marketing list. This retro gesture coincided with the official release of the single across digital streaming platforms, allowing a wider audience to access the track. The song features distinctive auto-tuned vocals by Casablancas combined with a mix of synths, guitars, and drums, reflecting a laid-back sound reminiscent of the band’s earlier Angles era while also addressing themes of consumerism and capitalism.
Produced by acclaimed music producer Rick Rubin in Costa Rica, Reality Awaits includes nine tracks that explore various moods and styles. The tracklist features titles such as “Psycho Shit,” “Dine N’Dash,” and “Liar’s Remorse,” with “Going Shopping” positioned as one of the central songs. Rubin’s involvement continues from his previous work with The Strokes, ensuring continuity in their evolving sound.
Following their San Francisco shows, where guitarist Nick Valensi was temporarily replaced by Steve Schiltz, The Strokes are gearing up for several major festival appearances this year. Their schedule includes performances at Coachella on April 11 and 18, Bonnaroo in mid-June, Outside Lands in early August, and Japan’s Summer Sonic Festival later in August. Fans can expect to hear “Going Shopping” alongside other new tracks during these live sets.
Critics and listeners have noted that “Going Shopping” balances nostalgia with fresh elements. The track’s relaxed yet slightly off-kilter feel complements the band’s signature tight guitar work while incorporating early ’80s pop influences. Lyrically, Casablancas critiques late-stage capitalism with lines like “Solidarity can be difficult when you got cool stuff to lose,” highlighting social commentary embedded within catchy melodies.
The Strokes’ use of cassette tapes as part of their promotional campaign adds a unique physical dimension to their digital release strategy, engaging fans with a tangible connection to the music. This approach aligns well with their retro-inspired teaser videos and overall aesthetic for Reality Awaits.
As anticipation builds for the full album launch in June, “Going Shopping” offers a compelling preview of what fans can expect from The Strokes’ latest creative chapter. With strong production values, thoughtful lyrics, and dynamic live performances already underway, the band continues to solidify its position as a leading force in modern indie rock.
