Nicole Buetti, a composer and puppeteer based in Vancouver, has captured the imagination of young audiences around the globe with her innovative children’s video series, “Meet the Planets.” This unique program combines memorable songs with educational content, using charming planetary puppets to introduce kids to the wonders of the solar system in a fun and engaging way. Buetti’s journey toward creating space-themed educational music began more than ten years ago while working in Los Angeles composing for films and theme parks. After feedback from friends suggested her Halloween music was too frightening for children, she decided to focus on crafting songs that would both entertain and educate. Inspired by her father, a physicist passionate about astronomy, she launched “Meet the Planets,” dedicating each song to a different planet or space phenomenon such as moons, asteroids, black holes, and dwarf planets.
Her creative process is hands-on: Buetti designs the puppets herself and composes music using computer software, performing all vocals live. The endearing hand puppets, called the Nirks—featuring characters like Vincent, a lovable cyclops—have become beloved by children worldwide. Her channel has amassed over 13 million views and thousands of followers, with many young fans reaching out to share scientific facts or request new songs about stars and other celestial bodies.
In addition to her work for children, Buetti maintains an active career composing music for adult audiences. Her compositions have been performed by symphonies and orchestras across North America. She also teaches bassoon and contrabassoon at several universities and regularly performs with regional orchestras. Despite her busy schedule balancing teaching, performing, composing, and video production, Buetti is driven by the joy her space-themed songs bring to children everywhere.
