As graduation ceremonies take place, music emerges as a powerful element shaping these milestone moments. Choral performances and popular songs frequently accompany the seasonal tradition. The selection of graduation songs has evolved across generations, mirroring changes in classroom customs and societal trends.

Older graduation songs, like those sung during the “Gukmin School” era, have faded out as traditions such as communal ceremonies and passing down textbooks are no longer practiced. Instead, songs like “Now It’s Goodbye” by 015B continue to be featured thanks to their relatable themes of connection and parting. More recent choices, such as “If You Don’t Dream,” are performed at graduations and children’s events, with lyrics urging listeners to pursue dreams, even when the path ahead seems uncertain. Parents often find these songs deeply moving as they listen to children sing about hope and aspiration, adding emotional weight to each ceremony.

For many students and families, these graduation songs become more than fleeting moments. The act of preparing and singing, memorizing lyrics and sharing with peers, leaves lasting impressions. Even without fully grasping the meaning, children absorb the music physically and emotionally. The songs may resurface in their memories during challenging times, serving as a reminder of youthful hope and perseverance. The repetition of singing chords and lyrics can turn these tunes into mantras, their meaning growing over the years.

Iconic songs like U2’s “Walk On” have also found a place within graduation events, giving students a soundtrack for their transitions. While traditional tracks like Green Day’s “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” commonly feature in photo slideshows, others seek more unique or meaningful selections. “Walk On,” with its message of facing challenges and moving forward fearlessly, resonates as an inspiring anthem for those embarking on new journeys. Its inclusion in ceremonies and personal playlists provides comfort and fortitude during moments of change.

Graduation songs, whether well-known or personally selected, symbolize more than celebration. They offer guidance, encourage bravery, and help graduates process feelings of nostalgia, hope, and anticipation. As students step into the next phase of their lives, these melodies continue to echo, offering support through memories and reminding them to carry forward what truly matters.
