Country music is often associated with songs about good times, heartbreak, and drinking, but a growing number of country artists are openly sharing their stories of sobriety and personal change, even as drinking remains a central theme in their music.
Many well-known country singers have chosen to step away from alcohol, some publicly revealing their struggles only after years of personal battles. Artists like Ashley McBryde cut out alcohol quietly in 2022, later explaining that she waited to share her journey until she was sure of her success. She says living sober has completely changed her life for the better.
Keith Urban, a superstar in the genre, has spoken openly about his fight with addiction. After several setbacks in rehab, he credits his wife Nicole Kidman for encouraging him to try again in 2006, a decision that has led him to lasting sobriety. Urban still occasionally draws on his past for inspiration, including recording tracks that reflect experiences with alcohol, such as “One Too Many.” He has described the creative process of channeling old habits into authentic performances while remaining sober.
Brantley Gilbert’s journey away from alcohol began after high school and continued until 2011. He has credited fellow artist Keith Urban with helping him make the transition to a sober life. Similarly, Shay Mooney of Dan + Shay quit drinking in 2023, which not only contributed to dramatic weight loss but also changed his outlook. Although he no longer drinks, Mooney continues to sing hits like “Tequila,” showing that personal growth and musical tradition can go hand in hand.
Other stars, including Tim McGraw, Jake Owen, and Charles Kelley of Lady A, have all faced their own moments of reckoning—from family interventions to health scares—that prompted them to reconsider their relationship with alcohol. Several, such as Joe Nichols and Jo Dee Messina, entered treatment programs after realizing how much alcohol was affecting their lives and music careers. Many say family support was essential to their recovery.
For some artists, giving up alcohol became a way to set a positive example for their children or reconnect with their faith. Walker Hayes, for instance, credits a friend from church for his transformation and has been open about both his past struggles and the lighter side of sobriety in his songs. Fellow singer Josh Turner has never drunk alcohol, choosing instead to focus on faith and a clean lifestyle. Similarly, Shania Twain abstains from drinking and expects her team to do the same, emphasizing health and discipline on and off stage.
Despite their personal choices, many of these artists continue performing and recording songs about drinking—honoring the genre’s traditions while offering new perspectives from lived experience. This approach reflects both the enduring popularity of drinking-related themes in country music and the evolving stories of the artists themselves. As their personal lives change, so do the stories they tell through their music, resonating with fans facing similar challenges and inspiring conversations about sobriety within the country music world.
