Selena Gomez has officially confirmed that Taylor Swift’s song “Dorothea,” featured on the 2020 album Evermore, was written about their longtime friendship. In a recent appearance on the “Friends Keep Secrets” podcast, hosted by her husband Benny Blanco, Gomez spoke candidly about her relationship with Swift, saying the track reflects the journey they have shared together since their teenage years.
Gomez explained that the two first met when she was 15 and Swift was 18. They faced many experiences side by side, from heartbreaks to major successes. According to Gomez, they have never viewed each other differently regardless of the changes in their lives. Listening to “Dorothea” now, Gomez said she is deeply moved by how well Swift captured the essence of their friendship in the lyrics. The song describes reconnecting with an old friend and contains lines about support, fame, and always being there for each other.
But “Dorothea” is not the only Taylor Swift song inspired by Gomez. The pop star also revealed the existence of an unreleased track titled “Family.” Swift wrote “Family” more than a decade ago, and its lyrics speak to the dreams both friends had as young women—Gomez wanting to act in movies, Swift aspiring to perform in stadiums. Gomez said that the track reminds her of how both of their dreams eventually came true, making the song especially emotional for her.
The friendship between Swift and Gomez has endured many major events, including heartbreaks, triumphs, and life milestones. Swift was present at Gomez’s wedding to Benny Blanco, and Gomez is reportedly expected to attend Swift’s wedding to Travis Kelce. Their 17-year bond began when both were dating Jonas Brothers nearly two decades ago, forming a connection that lasted even after those relationships ended.
In addition to musical tributes, Swift showed her affection for Gomez through a unique birthday gift on Gomez’s 30th birthday. Swift painted a moonlit lake scene for Gomez, complete with their star signs and a hand-stitched message: “Here’s to the next 30 years.” Benny Blanco was impressed by the artwork, thinking it was made by a famous artist before learning it was Swift’s handiwork. These gestures highlight how deeply the two stars value their friendship, making their connection a continued inspiration for fans.
