Selena Gomez has confirmed that Taylor Swift’s song “Dorothea” was written about her, putting an end to long-held speculation among fans. During a recent appearance on her husband Benny Blanco’s podcast, Friends Keep Secrets, Gomez spoke openly about her friendship with Swift, sharing new details about their close connection and musical tributes.
Gomez revealed that “Dorothea,” the eighth track from Swift’s 2020 album “Evermore,” was inspired by their years of growing up together in the spotlight. “‘Dorothea’ is about me,” Gomez said on the podcast. She described how she and Swift guided each other through important life moments, from relationships to family challenges, all while coming of age as teenagers in the public eye. Gomez explained, “I was 15 and she was 18. We were figuring it out together.”
The lyrics of “Dorothea” have long prompted theories about their inspiration, with references to “selling makeup and magazines” matching Gomez’s career, especially her Rare Beauty brand. Gomez expressed admiration for the way Swift captured their journey in song, saying she is always moved by how thoughtfully the lyrics reflect their experiences. “When I listen to it, I’m so impressed by how it’s eloquently put,” Gomez shared.
In addition to confirming “Dorothea” was about her, Gomez also disclosed that Swift wrote another song, titled “Family,” which remains unreleased. According to Gomez, this song was written over a decade ago and highlights the dreams they both had while navigating the entertainment industry. The lyrics, she said, speak to their shared ambitions, such as acting in movies and playing to crowds, and the belief they held in each other’s goals before they came true. “Now, when I listen to that song, both of those things have happened for us,” she reflected. “It’s really sweet, because back then, it was just our story.”
The two stars first became close as teenagers, initially bonding over dating the Jonas Brothers—Gomez with Nick Jonas and Swift with Joe Jonas. Their friendship has grown over the past 17 years, overcoming public breakups, major career successes, and personal milestones. “We both ended up, fortunately, being engaged around the same time,” added Gomez, referring to their recent major life events. The pair continue to support each other, with Swift even gifting Gomez a hand-painted artwork for her 30th birthday, further highlighting their strong connection.
