Corinne Bailey Rae, the Grammy-winning British singer-songwriter, has transformed her beloved 2006 hit song “Put Your Records On” into her first children’s book. The new book, published by Rocky Pond Books, follows the story of a girl named Bea who spends a joyful day listening to records from her aunt’s music collection. Each song takes Bea on a different emotional journey, reflecting the feelings that music can bring.
The heart of the story comes from Corinne’s own childhood, when she would dance around her room to her father’s records. She remembers writing the original song, even finishing some of the lyrics while riding a train. These experiences gave her a deep connection to music, which she wanted to share with children through her book.
Much of the inspiration for adapting the song into a book came from Corinne’s two daughters, aged 8 and 6. During family trips, she often tells them stories, drawing from her own life. She explained that raising her children made her think more about how music connects people and helps us understand our emotions, even when they are difficult. The book doesn’t avoid topics like sadness. Corinne herself faced the loss of her first husband in 2008, and she believes that being honest about all kinds of feelings is important for children.
Corinne says motherhood has brought her extra gratitude and appreciation for joyful moments. She tries to stay present with her children, knowing that time is precious. She is also preparing for the 20th anniversary of “Put Your Records On” and her debut album, with a special tour planned. Music continues to play a big part in her life and brings her happiness.
The new book “Put Your Records On” is now available to buy. Corinne hopes young readers will discover how music can be a friend, offering comfort and joy through all of life’s ups and downs.
