Irish rock icons U2 have quietly unveiled their latest EP, Easter Lily, timed to coincide with Good Friday, a day deeply significant in Christian tradition. This six-track release follows closely on the heels of their surprise EP Days of Ash, which debuted on Ash Wednesday less than two months ago. Maintaining a reflective and introspective mood, Easter Lily explores profound themes including faith, friendship, and personal rebirth.
The new collection offers listeners an intimate journey through human connection and spiritual endurance. Among the standout songs is “Song for Hal,” featuring vocals by The Edge and dedicated to the late producer Hal Wilner, who passed away in 2020 and would have celebrated his 70th birthday this April. Other notable tracks include “In a Life,” a poignant tribute to lasting friendship, and “Scars,” which embraces vulnerability and healing through acceptance.
Resurrection and renewal lie at the heart of Easter Lily’s message. Songs like “Resurrection Song” capture the emotional pilgrimage shared with a loved one into unfamiliar inner landscapes. Meanwhile, “Easter Parade” serves as a devotional ode to spiritual awakening and fresh beginnings. The EP concludes with “COEXIST (I Will Bless the Lord at All Times?),” an ambient lullaby crafted by Brian Eno that pays homage to parents enduring the hardships faced by their children in times of conflict.
Bono, U2’s lead singer, described the creation of Easter Lily as emerging from what the band refers to as their “wilderness years,” a period marked by global turmoil and social unrest. He explained that this EP reflects their quest for meaning amid confusion and chaos, grappling with how faith endures even when religious beliefs are often misunderstood or misused. Bono also cited Patti Smith’s 1978 album Easter as a key influence during his early years.
While U2 is currently preparing a full-length album scheduled for release later this year—their first since 2017’s Songs of Experience—Easter Lily offers fans a deeply personal and contemplative listening experience. Through its exploration of faith, friendship, and resurrection, the EP encourages reflection on renewal during challenging times. The collection is now available across all major digital platforms.
