Lucha Moreno, a celebrated figure in Mexican ranchera music and a respected actress from the Golden Age of Mexican cinema, died peacefully on April 15 at the age of 86. Her passing was confirmed by her daughter Irma Hernández, known as Mimí from the popular group Flans. Mimí shared an emotional tribute on social media, describing her mother as a strong and loving woman who left surrounded by family and affection.
Born Irma Gloria Ochoa Salinas on April 23, 1939, in Guadalupe, Nuevo León, Moreno was recognized for her powerful voice and deep connection to traditional Mexican music. Throughout her career, she blended emotional intensity with cultural authenticity, making significant contributions to ranchera music. Alongside her husband José Juan, she formed a successful musical duo in the 1960s. Together, they recorded approximately 20 albums under the Orfeón and RCA Victor labels, producing hits such as “Tú y Yo,” “Deja Deja,” and “La Margarita.”
Moreno’s influence extended beyond music into film and television. She debuted in cinema in 1957 with the movie “Asesinos, S.A.,” where she also performed the song “La Noche de Mi Mal.” Her television career included roles in well-known telenovelas like “Quinceañera,” “Amor en Silencio,” and “Te Sigo Amando.” These appearances helped solidify her legacy as a versatile artist who bridged traditional music with popular culture.
The singer’s albums like “Tú y Yo” (1970), “Amor Perfecto” (1970), and “Serenata De Amor” (1976) are regarded as classics within Mexican ranchera music. Her vocal style was noted for its strength and sincerity, qualities that earned her a lasting place in the hearts of fans across generations.
Moreno’s personal life was closely tied to her artistic journey. She shared nearly six decades of marriage with José Juan until his death in January 2025. They raised three children together: Mimí Hernández, Ileana (who passed away some years ago), and José Juan Hernández Ochoa, who also pursued music before becoming a businessman.
Her death marks the loss of one of Mexico’s most cherished voices in love songs and ranchera music. Lucha Moreno’s contributions helped preserve and celebrate Mexican cultural heritage through heartfelt performances that continue to inspire artists and listeners alike.
