On April 8, music and free expression came together in a powerful celebration at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena during the Freedom Forum’s first-ever Freely Fest. The event brought artists and fans together to honor the spirit of the First Amendment through songs about freedom and civil liberties. Throughout the evening, performers shared their personal connections to free speech and the importance of the five freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment.
Hosted by Ariana DeBose, the festival featured a range of musical acts from local Nashville artists to headline performers. Between sets, musicians performed songs inspired by stories that highlight how music can serve as a platform for expressing ideas, defending rights, and connecting people across differences. Avery Anna, one of the performers, expressed her appreciation for how music offers a space for both speaking out and listening, emphasizing its role in bringing people together regardless of background or belief.
The celebration extended beyond the stage with fans inside Bridgestone Arena and viewers watching a nationwide livestream joining in to share what they “speak freely” for. This interactive participation created a vibrant digital mosaic showing how the First Amendment influences everyday life for many Americans. Outside the arena, festivalgoers explored Freely Fest Village, engaging with hands-on exhibits designed to bring the freedoms of speech, religion, press, assembly, and petition to life in accessible and meaningful ways.
Freely Fest was more than just a music event; it was a shared experience aimed at deepening public understanding and appreciation of fundamental freedoms. The Freedom Forum, which marked its 35th anniversary this year, hopes that events like this will inspire more people to recognize and defend the five freedoms enshrined in the First Amendment. The festival’s success reflects growing efforts to use art and culture as tools for civic education and community connection.
As attendees left Bridgestone Arena that night, many carried with them a renewed sense of what it means to live in a country where freedom of expression is protected. The combination of heartfelt music performances and interactive learning opportunities created an atmosphere where civil liberties were celebrated not just as legal rights but as vital parts of everyday American life. Freely Fest stands as a reminder that songs about freedom continue to inspire and unite people in defending their constitutional rights.
