King Ultramega, a collaborative rock collective, has unveiled a new cover of Chris Cornell’s song “Dead Wishes,” featuring Mastodon’s Brann Dailor on lead vocals. This release continues the group’s ongoing tribute to the late Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman, honoring his legacy while supporting mental health initiatives through MusiCares.

Originally from Cornell’s 2015 solo album “Higher Truth,” “Dead Wishes” is a deeply emotional and introspective ballad. King Ultramega’s version stays true to the original while expanding its sound with orchestral arrangements, including violins, cellos, sleigh bells, and xylophones. The production was led by Mark Menghi, who also played bass and conducted the strings. Angel Vivaldi contributed both acoustic and electric guitars, Frank Mitaritonna provided keyboards, and veteran drummer Kenny Aronoff handled drums and percussion.
Menghi shared that he connected with the song during moments of reflection and relaxation, appreciating its simplicity and depth. His aim was to create an atmospheric soundscape that honors Cornell’s original work while adding new layers to the arrangement. Vocal duties were entrusted to Brann Dailor after Menghi heard him singing lead vocals in a Mastodon cover of “Stairway to Heaven.” Although initially hesitant due to the challenge, Dailor embraced the opportunity as a way to pay homage to one of his musical heroes.
Dailor expressed that singing on the track was both an honor and a challenge, noting that it pushed him outside his usual role as a drummer. He also highlighted the personal significance of the project, connecting it to his own experiences with mental health struggles in his family. The collaboration aims not only to celebrate Cornell’s artistry but also to raise funds for MusiCares, which provides mental health support and emergency assistance to members of the music community.
King Ultramega has previously released covers of other Cornell-related songs such as Audioslave’s “Be Yourself” and Soundgarden’s “Rusty Cage.” The project has received support from notable musicians including Kim Thayil of Soundgarden, who has contributed guitar parts and encouraged the tribute efforts. Menghi emphasized how important it is to have the blessing of Cornell’s bandmates and family in carrying out this tribute.
The release of “Dead Wishes” adds to a growing catalog of King Ultramega’s reimagined versions of Chris Cornell’s music. Fans can access these recordings through multiple streaming platforms, with proceeds helping support musicians facing mental health challenges. This initiative highlights the ongoing impact of Cornell’s music and legacy while addressing critical issues within the artistic community.
In addition to honoring Cornell’s influence, this collaboration shines a light on songs about wishes—those heartfelt desires expressed through music that resonate deeply with listeners worldwide. “Dead Wishes” stands as a powerful example of how artists continue to find meaning in such songs years after their initial release.
King Ultramega’s cover of “Dead Wishes” is now available for streaming. The project encourages fans not only to celebrate Chris Cornell’s profound contributions but also to support vital causes related to mental health within the music industry.
