As Easter approaches, themes of resurrection and renewal have inspired new musical works and global celebrations. The renowned band U2 has recently released their second new EP of 2026 titled “Easter Lily,” which explores gentle, spiritually focused themes centered around rebirth and faith. This digital-only six-track collection follows their earlier EP “Days of Ash,” released on Ash Wednesday, which addressed issues like war and global conflict. The “Easter Lily” EP includes songs such as “Resurrection Song,” “Easter Parade,” and “COEXIST (I Will Bless The Lord At All Times?),” the latter featuring a soundscape by Brian Eno. Bono, the band’s lead singer, shared insights about the EP’s personal and reflective nature, touching on questions about faith, friendship, and rituals that connect to the Easter promise of renewal.
The release coincides with significant public expressions of Easter joy worldwide. In Madrid’s Plaza Cibeles, over 60,000 people gathered for the fourth annual “Festival of the Resurrection,” a musical event celebrating the spirit of Easter through performances by groups including Hakuna, the Gypsy Kings, and singer Liz Mitchell. Archbishop Piero Pioppo read a message from Pope Leo XIV, emphasizing that Easter’s joy is a powerful music that breaks through spiritual resignation and mediocrity. The Pope highlighted how faith in Jesus Christ brings meaning and fulfillment to human joy, urging Christians to live as vibrant witnesses to the Resurrection in their communities.
Pope Leo XIV’s message praised music as a vital expression of Easter happiness and called for Christians to let their lives become a harmonious song of faith, unity, and charity. He encouraged believers to overcome inner lukewarmness and spiritual complacency by embracing the transformative power of Christ’s Resurrection. The Pope also expressed his hope that Easter celebrations through music would spread worldwide, inspiring renewed commitment among young people and communities alike.
Meanwhile, Bono described U2’s new EP as part of their creative journey toward a forthcoming full-length album. He framed these releases as “side detours” that explore deep personal questions in challenging times. The songs reflect themes such as friendship during lockdowns, acceptance of life’s scars, spiritual pilgrimage, and parental hope amid conflict. Bono also referenced Patti Smith’s influential 1978 album “Easter,” acknowledging its impact on his own artistic vision.
Together, these musical contributions—both from U2 and the global festival—highlight how songs about resurrection continue to resonate deeply during the Easter season. They serve not only as artistic expressions but also as calls for spiritual renewal and community solidarity in a complex world. As Easter joy bursts forth in song and celebration across continents, it reaffirms the enduring power of music to unite people in hope and faith.
