Dordt University is set to host its biannual Christian High School Music Festival on Friday, April 17, welcoming 625 students from 14 Christian high schools across the United States. This event brings together young singers from states including California, Colorado, and Michigan to celebrate their passion for music and their shared faith.
The festival offers a rich program that includes four main activities: a massed choir performance featuring all 625 students alongside 150 members of Dordt’s Chorale and Concert Choir; a large-group clinic where choirs perform and receive expert feedback; a solo and ensemble clinic; and a special Future Music Educators program recognizing nominated students with opportunities for further musical education, including scholarships.
Dr. Ryan Smit, Director of Choral Activities at Dordt University, explains that the festival is more than just a music event. It is a chance for high school choirs to express their love for Christ through song and deepen their spiritual connection. “We hope students leave feeling inspired by the musical experience, spiritually enriched by the lyrics, and motivated to use their musical gifts in service to God,” he said.
A highlight of the festival will be the presence of Craig Courtney, an internationally acclaimed choral composer and church musician. Courtney will co-lead the festival’s clinics alongside Dr. Smit and will premiere a new piece commissioned especially for this event. The world premiere will take place during the final concert held in Vernon Arena.
The day’s events start at 9 a.m., culminating in an evening concert at 7 p.m. in B.J. Haan Auditorium, with the massed choir performing in Vernon Arena following the initial sessions. The festival promises an immersive experience where young musicians not only improve their skills but also grow in faith and fellowship.
