Disney’s latest animated film, “Wish,” celebrates the power of wishes through its original soundtrack, featuring seven new songs written by Grammy-nominated Julia Michaels and Grammy-winning producer Benjamin Rice. Released as part of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 100th anniversary, the film blends classic Disney musical traditions with fresh storytelling and modern sounds.
The music team was brought on early in the project, with Michaels creating the demo for the theme song “This Wish” before the script was even completed. This song set the tone and direction for the entire movie, serving as an emotional anchor for the story of Asha, a courageous 17-year-old heroine voiced by Ariana DeBose. Asha lives in Rosas, a magical kingdom built on the power of people’s wishes, ruled by King Magnifico, voiced by Chris Pine.
The soundtrack introduces audiences to Rosas through “Welcome to Rosas,” a vibrant opening number that reflects the kingdom’s cultural influences and Asha’s love for her home. This song had to be energetic and informative, explaining the world where wishes are treasured and controlled by Magnifico. Michaels incorporated regional musical elements to capture the spirit of this fictional kingdom.
Another key song, “At All Costs,” is a duet between Asha and King Magnifico that explores their contrasting views on protecting wishes. While it sounds like a love song when heard alone, within the film it highlights their opposing motivations—selfless hope versus selfish control. Both actors recorded their parts separately but managed to convey deep emotion and tension.
“This Wish,” the film’s central anthem, was designed to feel both classic and modern. It expresses Asha’s brave journey to reclaim the wishes for her community. The song’s reprise later in the film marks a powerful moment of unity as the townspeople reclaim their hopes and dreams.
The soundtrack also includes playful and educational numbers like “I’m a Star,” which creatively teaches about our cosmic connection while delivering an inclusive message. Villain King Magnifico is given his own character song, “This Is the Thanks I Get?!,” which reveals his charming but dark personality through shifting tones.
The revolutionary spirit of the story culminates in “Knowing What I Know Now,” a drum-driven anthem that captures Asha’s rise as a leader inspiring change against oppression. The final song, “A Wish Worth Making,” performed by Julia Michaels herself during the end credits, encapsulates themes of hope and empowerment.
Together, these songs enrich “Wish” by weaving music deeply into its narrative about courage, dreams, and community strength. Available now on all streaming platforms, the soundtrack continues Disney’s legacy of memorable musical storytelling that resonates with audiences of all ages.
