On April 11, music lovers gathered at Newport World Resorts in Manila for a special tribute concert honoring the Bee Gees. The event, titled The Best of Bee Gees, was led by a tribute band officially endorsed by the Bee Gees family. The show was made even more memorable by the Manila Symphony Orchestra, conducted by American maestro George Ellis.
The concert was more than just a musical performance; it was a journey into nostalgia for many attendees. As the band played beloved hits like “How Deep Is Your Love,” “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” and “I Started a Joke,” the audience was transported back to their personal memories connected to these songs. One attendee recalled growing up in Mindoro, where these classics were a daily soundtrack played by a devoted father.
The event highlighted the Bee Gees’ influence not only as performers but also as songwriters behind many famous hits performed by other global artists such as Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, and Diana Ross. This revelation added another layer of appreciation among the crowd.
Core members of the tribute band—Evan Webster as Barry Gibb, Russell Davey as Robin Gibb, and Greg Wain as Maurice Gibb—were joined by special guests including Nick Endacott-Gibb and Debora McLane. A touching tribute to Andy Gibb, the youngest brother whose solo career was tragically cut short, brought emotional depth to the evening.
One of the concert’s most energetic moments was the Saturday Night Fever segment. The band invited everyone to stand and dance to disco classics from the iconic soundtrack featuring John Travolta. The audience responded enthusiastically, creating a lively atmosphere where strangers united through shared love for music.
The concert also featured storytelling elements from former drummer Colin “Smiley” Petersen, providing historical context from the early days of the Bee Gees in 1965 through their later success. This blend of music and storytelling gave fans both new and old a deeper connection to the legacy of the group.
By the time of the encore, applause filled the venue as people showed their appreciation with standing ovations. The final performance was powerful and heartfelt, leaving everyone with a sense that they had experienced more than just a concert—it was a celebration of memories and timeless music.
For many attendees, The Best of Bee Gees concert proved that songs about nostalgia hold a unique power. These classic tunes do more than entertain; they reconnect people with their pasts, with family moments, and with emotions that remain vivid across generations.
