The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced its class of 2026 inductees during a live segment on “American Idol.” This year’s list features 18 honorees across several categories, celebrating artists and contributors who have significantly shaped the music landscape. The formal induction ceremony is set to take place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on November 14, with a broadcast scheduled for December on ABC and Disney+.
Among the performers entering the Hall of Fame are Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Sade, Luther Vandross, Wu-Tang Clan, Queen Latifah, Oasis, Joy Division/New Order, and several others. These artists were selected after being nominated by a voting body of over 1,200 musicians, historians, and industry experts. To be eligible for induction, artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years prior.
Phil Collins is recognized for his remarkable career that spans over five decades, both as a solo artist and as a member of Genesis. Known for his distinctive voice and ability to blend genres like progressive rock, pop, R&B, and soul, Collins has sold more than 150 million records worldwide. Billy Idol is celebrated for bringing punk rock’s energy to mainstream audiences in the 1980s with his iconic style and memorable hits.
Iron Maiden is hailed as one of the most influential heavy metal bands. Their powerful sound and theatrical performances set a standard for metal acts globally. Meanwhile, Joy Division/New Order are noted for pioneering post-punk and electronic dance music scenes in Manchester during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Oasis gained fame in the 1990s with their anthemic rock sound that became synonymous with British culture. Sade’s smooth blend of jazz, soul, and R&B has earned them a dedicated fan base over four decades. Luther Vandross is remembered as a defining voice in love songs, known for his emotional depth and songwriting skills.
Wu-Tang Clan revolutionized hip-hop with their collective style and cultural impact that extends beyond music into fashion and film. Queen Latifah and MC Lyte are recognized in the Early Influence category for their role in inspiring future generations through hip-hop.
Other honorees include recipients of awards recognizing musical excellence and industry contributions. The Musical Excellence Award honors influential producers and songwriters like Rick Rubin and Ahmet Ertegun. The Ahmet Ertegun Award acknowledges non-performing professionals such as Ed Sullivan who have greatly influenced rock music’s growth.
Notable nominees who were not inducted this year include Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, Pink, Shakira, and INXS. The Rock Hall continues to honor artists whose work has left a lasting mark on music history. This year’s class reflects a diverse range of styles and eras that demonstrate rock and roll’s ongoing evolution.
